Vision of Krishna INfrared Detector Laboratory


  Infrared photonic detectors (wavelengths between 2-20 microns) have been around for the past five decades. In this period, they have evolved from single pixel detectors (1st Generation: 60-70s), linear arrays (2nd Generation: 80-90s) to large format arrays (3rd Generation: 2000-present). The emphasis for 3rd generation imagers is now on higher operating temperature (HOT), large format (4K x 4K) and multispectral imaging.

  Our research group is providing a vision for the fourth generation of infrared imaging systems and applications. These systems will meet the goals of HOT operation and large formats. They will incorporate commercial, visible sensor production techniques to reduce the cost and expand the availability of imaging sensors. They will expand what can be measured at the pixel level to include spectrally resolved information (infrared “color”), polarization, and phase. The sensor and pixels will be dynamically adjustable in order to apply to a variety of missions and even respond automatically under the control of an algorithm. These enhancements will lead to an infrared sensor that can behave and be used more like the human eye: capture a wide variety of spatial and color information and adjust on-the-fly based on the light conditions and viewer’s need.




  With the nanoscale fabrication capabilities of the Nanotech West, the technological resources of close collaborative ties, and our experienced research team, the Krishna INfrared Detector (KIND) group is working towards this goal. Our capabilities include molecular beam epitaxy III-V semiconductor growth, lithography (standard and nano-imprint), chip hybridization using flip-chip-bonding, minority carrier lifetime and photoluminescence of semiconductors, various electrical and optical device characterizations and much more.
